How Baby Sleeping Aids Can Improve Baby Development

Prolonged sleep deprivation in babies can have an effect on normal brain development and growth. Without adequate sleep, the brain operates less efficiently and memory becomes impaired. Even short term sleep deprivation can have serious consequences on your baby's mood, behaviour and overall health. Here are some of the best sleeping aids that can promote a better night's sleep for your baby. In turn, parents will also get a better night's sleep for themselves.

• Bed time routine. One of the best sleeping aids is a regular and consistent bed time routine. If the same things happen every night, then your baby will soon learn to associate the routine with sleep.

• Music. Classical music, lullabies and womb sounds reassure your baby that her crib or cot is a warm and comforting place to be. This makes sense when you think back to time in the womb, when your baby was exposed to an orchestra of gurgles, swishes and beats.

• Night lights. Although your baby may sleep better in a dark room, when she wakes up in the night, she may feel disoriented because she cannot see the things that she recognises around her. The soft glow of a night light can help to reassure your baby that she is in familiar surroundings and soothe her back to sleep again.

Baby Sleeping bag. This product will keep your baby at the right temperature and remove the need for bed covers, which can be a potential hazard if she gets entangled in them. Your baby can be picked up in the sleeping bag for a cuddle or a feed and settled back to sleep in the crib or cot with minimal disturbance. Make sure that the sleeping bag fits comfortably and that the tog rating is suitable for the season.

• Comforter. Your baby may fall asleep more easily if she has a soft, silky blanket or familiar soft toy nearby to provide comfort and security. Very often, preference is directed towards comforters that bear the smell of a loving and responsive adult. Even the best sleepers sometimes need a little comfort and reassurance!

• Slumber bear. A fabulous sleep aid, which can lull your baby to sleep in minutes! The Slumber Bear plays actual human heartbeat and intra-uterine sounds, which remind her of the security and comfort of the womb.

• Cuddly toys. Cuddly toys that emit a pleasant smell such as lavender can reduce stress and aid relaxation before bedtime. When gently heated, the toy can warm your baby's feet and hands, which can trigger the sleep mechanism.

• Swaddle blanket. Prevents your baby from startling herself awake and relieves digestive problems such as colic and milk reflux by providing gentle, even pressure around the abdomen. Research shows that swaddling can increase the length of time that your baby spends sleeping because it is associated with the comfort and security of the womb.

• Sleep positioner. A sleep positioner can help your baby get a comfortable night's sleep and stay in the correct sleeping position. The gentle incline of the positioner can alleviate digestive problems and help to reduce milk reflux. The sleep positioner also has a device that mimics the sound of the human heartbeat, which gives your baby the sensation that you are close by.

• Natural lamb's wool fleece. Recognised for centuries as a natural sleep aid, which traps warm air, absorbs or releases moisture and keeps your baby's temperature stable. Cover the lamb's wool fleece with a fitted sheet if used in the crib or cot.

Sleep aids can help your baby to fall asleep without leading to any problems or bad sleep habits. They can be parental lifesavers!
