10 Survival Tips For Taking Young Children Camping

"Let's go camping!" With those few simple words you are instantly a hero to your children. To ensure you remain that way during the camping trip, you better make sure you have planned well and are prepared for all types of contingencies. Along with lots of snacks and back-up rain gear, bring along these 10 activities and suggestions to keep your children occupied and happy while camping.

Scavenger hunt - Depending on the age(s) of your children this can be as simple or complicated as you would like to make it. For younger children that you want to keep close to the campsite, make sure you take a good look around before sending them off to hunt - make sure the items can be found close-by.

Nature book - Fold 5 sheets of construction paper in half and staple them together along the fold to create a nature book that your children can fill full of keepsakes. In a bag, put in a glue stick, tape, and some writing instruments and encourage them to find interesting treasures to put in the book or draw pictures of.

Baby wipes - Never stop buying baby wipes just because your kids are no longer in diapers. These little wonders make life a lot easier when out in the wilderness - or even around the house.

Getting to sleep - If your children are too excited or a bit nervous about sleeping in a tent, go for a slow drive around the campgrounds until they fall asleep in the car. And then execute the trick every parent must master - the transfer of a sleeping child into bed (or in this case a sleeping bag). Or you can lay down with them until they fall asleep and then make your escape.

Board & card games - Everyone needs down time, even when camping. Don't forget to bring the classics along - Monopoly & Uno were always favorites in my family. Invite your camping neighbors over to join in and make some new friends.

Fresh Ice Cream - Yes, hot chocolate and smores are the traditional camping treats, but why not shake things up a bit with this recipe for homemade ice cream in a bag.

Disposable Cameras - Buy each child their own disposal camera. Give them an assignment to take pictures of during the trip (how many different birds, trees, or rocks can you find). Or have them take a picture of an object and then a really close-up picture of the same object for a fun game to have at home - having to guess what the close-up picture is of.

Flashlights - A flashlight is not just to scare away the dark, you can put on a shadow show with one from inside the tent or behind a tarp instead of telling spooky stories around the campfire.

Music - Bring a battery-powered CD player for night time. The sounds of nature are beautiful but if you aren't used to them they can be scary. Soothing music will help mask all the sounds that might scare or wake-up the kids.

Toys - Most tent campgrounds have a foundation of dirt. Bring shovel and pails and any other outdoor toys that will keep the children busy right by the tent. Buy a bucket of dinosaurs and hide them in the dirt around the site and then send out the little explorers on a dinosaur expedition.

Along with these 10 ideas, have fun, let the kids run free and don't forget the bug spray.

Winter Travel Safety with Baby

Sudden snow storms, blizzards, and sleet are some of the hazards you might face when traveling during the winter months. People who live in areas prone to winter weather are used to the harsh conditions. But those of use who do not live in these locations need to take precautions when traveling there. Especially when traveling with children.

Whether you are visiting relatives in the northern states or just driving to the local mountains for a day in the snow, you will want to be prepared for any event. There are some things you can do, and bring, to help you survive an unexpected incident.

Before you leave

Check the local weather channel for the current and projected forecast. If there is a chance of bad weather, then do not go. Nothing is worth risking your family's safety.

Make sure your cell phone is charged before you leave, but be aware you might not have service everywhere along your route. It is possible, should you become stranded, and you might have to hike to find a signal.

Arrange to call someone when you get there. Should this person not hear from you in the allotted time, they can call the authorities for you? Also, be sure to let them know what route you will be taking, so they can alert rescue personal where to look should they not hear from you.

Your Emergency Bag

When packing your vehicle for the trip, consider putting these items into your car, just in case.

Blankets, Sweaters or Sleeping Bags The biggest danger you face, if bad weather strands you in your car, is the loss of body heat. Bundling up will extend the time you can stay in your car until help arrives.

Food and Water You want to keep food and water in an emergency bag in your car. Bottled water is the easiest to buy and store. You should keep about one gallon per person. You also want to keep high-energy food in your emergency bag as well. Pretzels, granola bars, and breakfast bars are good choices to keep. These kinds of things do not go bad over time, and can be very filling.

Light Sources Keep a good flashlight, with spare batteries, in your bag. You can also keep some of those glow sticks in the bag, to help keep your kids entertained and less afraid. Most camping supply stores carry emergency flashlights and glow stick.

First Aid Kit Every person, whether they have kids or not, should have a first aid kit in their car. Emergencies happen without warning and you never know when you might need a bandage.

Extras to Pack

Kid Items If you have an infant pack extra diapers, wipes and powdered formula. Pack small toys or an entertaining game for older kids to play. If you should become stuck somewhere, you want to be able to keep your children calm and distracted from what is happening.

Should You Become Trapped

First thing you should do is remain calm. Panic will not help and will only make things worse. Take some deep breaths and remember you are prepared for this.

Second, do not leave your car unless absolutely necessary. Your best chance for being rescued is to stay with your car. It is safer to remain where you are than to try to find your way in unfamiliar territory.

Prepare yourself ahead of time, before you get into your car to go for that winter drive. Pack your car with the proper gear to insure your family has the supplies they will need should the unthinkable happens. That, along with a cool head, is what you will need to keep your family safe.

Travel Systems for Baby

Baby’s love movement, therefore when it comes to choosing travel systems for babies, it’s important to choose prams and strollers that will ensure baby is comfortable and relaxed while traveling. You can select travel systems for the youngest newborn and infant to the more active toddler. Today’s strollers offer a wide variety of choices and it’s best to carefully decide which system is best for your family’s needs before baby arrives. Travel systems are one of the most important pieces of nursery equipment that you will own, so choose your system carefully.

Travel systems allow caregivers to have plenty of versatility when traveling with their child. Your child can go effortlessly from his or her infant carrier or car seat to the stroller with a simple click of a button, snapping the carrier into place. This provides tremendous benefits to parents and caregivers who have been driving with the baby sleeping comfortably. By using the travel system, you don’t have to worry about waking the baby up and can move the baby to the stroller without disturbing his or her sleep.

There are several features you should look at and take into consideration when choosing travel systems. First, you must ensure that you can easily carry or transport the system. Looking for models that are sturdy and durable yet lightweight will often ensure that you can move the system without much difficulty. It’s also important to make sure that you can easily fold the system and store it in your vehicle.

You might also want to consider selecting a system that will accommodate your child from the infant to toddler years. These systems are practical and provide many benefits as well as being convenient.

Looking for systems that have adjustable positions will also ensure that as your child grows, he or she will be comfortable in a variety of seating positions in the system. Travel systems also come equipped with numerous different features, as well as features that you can purchase separately. Check with the manufacturer’s full line of products, as there may be more pieces that you might be interested in as well.

Consider the travel systems that you choose as an investment in your child. Your system can last for many years, bringing your child plenty of enjoyment. However, it is imperative to remember that the first issue of concern is your baby’s safety. You must take the time to check out the travel system and ensure that it is safe. One feature that you should look at is whether or not the system is sturdy enough to remain upright if you place a diaper bag over the handles. The system might have a storage compartment underneath for bags as well. It’s also a good idea to check the height of the stroller’s handles. If the handles are too low the caregiver might find that their back becomes strained while pushing their child. Many travel systems come with adjustable handlebars to ensure that you have the correct height at all times. If you think this will be an issue, then consider choosing a system with adjustable handlebars.

Enjoying Camping With Your New Baby

Camping trips and outdoor activities do not have to be limited to your children who are older than one year of age. You can enjoy your favorite camping spot with your new baby. A little extra packing and planning go a long way to help you have an enjoyable outing with your family and to teach your baby your love of the outdoors.

A practice camping trip may be a good idea for both you and your baby. This can help you assess how your baby will react to sleeping someplace new and will help ensure that you have brought all the supplies you will need. Set up camp somewhere close to home or even in your backyard. This is the perfect time to invest in a good backpack diaper bag and get it organized with all the essential supplies that you will need to keep close at hand.

When camping with your baby, never underestimate the power of being prepared. At times it can be overwhelming to see just how much equipment you need to bring for such a tiny person, but having all the supplies can make the different between a fun-filled family adventure and a disaster. When packing, start with the amount of clothes you think you will need and add one more day or so. Bring clothes that are easy to change in and out of and can be layered. Also bring extra diapers and wipes. Bring more wipes than you think is necessary.

Sunscreen and hats are important for daytime use. Keep in mind that babies under six months should not wear insect repellent, but you can drape a large piece of mosquito netting over their stroller or crib for protection.

Camping is a great place to use your portable play yard. With some familiar toys, the play yard can keep your baby occupied while setting up and taking down your tent, cooking, cleaning and provides a comfortable, familiar place for their all-important naptime. Backpack baby carriers are ideal to use for walking and hiking. If you are breastfeeding your baby you have everything you need with you. You may want to use bottle liners and powdered formula if you are bottle feeding. It is also a good idea to invest in a simple child locator device. They come in many cute styles, such as a tiny teddy bear, that can be securely attached to your child's shoe or clothing and can literally be a lifesaver if an emergency arises.

When packing the bedding, make sure to bring some of your baby's own blankets that they normally sleep with and are comforting to them. If you're camping during cooler weather, bring sleeper pajamas or a sleep sack for your baby to bundle up in. Your baby can sleep right in their portable crib or you can roll up some towels or blankets to use as bumpers and lay your baby next to your sleeping bag.

The most important thing to remember when camping with your baby is to keep your little one safe, comfortable and entertained. It may take a little more effort and lot more equipment to bring your baby camping, but the smiles and memories will make it all well worth it.

Sleeping Like A Baby - Whoever Said That Didn't Have One

Sleeping like a baby - Huh!

Sure - you come home from the hospital with that little bundle of joy in your arms, and he looks so peaceful & adorable - until you go to sleep that is...

No sooner are you asleep, exhausted from your day looking after the little guy, you're woken up with a howling baby on your hands. I thought for a long time that this was something I just needed to deal with - I had tried baby wraps, safetsleeps, & other items that promised to cure the restless baby - none of them worked. But then I discovered that your baby (and you) can have a good night sleep - only waking up for the middle of the night feed.

What did I discover? Two things actually - both of which worked independantly, but even better together.

The first item to ensure a great night sleep was a baby sleeping bag. I had been using blankets & sheets etc.., but my son kept waking up because he kept kicking the bedware off & he ended up getting cold (especially during the winter months).

Baby sleeping bags are great because they eliminate this problem - you just pop your baby into the bag & button (or zip) it up. The bag holds the baby securely inside, and no more cold toes!! The sleeping bags diminish the need for other blankets - which is great for the safety aspect. You don't need to worry that your baby is being smothered by blankets creeping up over his head. You can even get sleeping bags with openings in them so that you can change your baby in the middle of the night without disturbing his sleep. When you are looking for a sleeping bag be sure to get one that zips from top to bottom - so that the zip ends up at the base of the baby (rather than the shoulder). This will ensure that the bag can not open up with any wriggling that your baby may do - this is safer, and also more comfortable.

The second item that I will recommend getting is a radio. Plain and simple...

Have it playing on a music station at a low level all night. I've found that babies enjoy the sound and if they do start to stir, the comfort of knowing that someone is there talking or singing (and the radio is a very convincing decoy to a young one) is enough to send them off to dream land again.A lot of people recommend to go out and buy special CD's with soothing noises that do the same job, but I found that this wasn't necessary as the radio performed excellently (and I can assure you - I had a very restless child).

So.... if you have a restless child - don't be thinking you can't do anything about it - invest in a baby sleeping bag, and cheap radio today!

How Baby Sleeping Aids Can Improve Baby Development

Prolonged sleep deprivation in babies can have an effect on normal brain development and growth. Without adequate sleep, the brain operates less efficiently and memory becomes impaired. Even short term sleep deprivation can have serious consequences on your baby's mood, behaviour and overall health. Here are some of the best sleeping aids that can promote a better night's sleep for your baby. In turn, parents will also get a better night's sleep for themselves.

• Bed time routine. One of the best sleeping aids is a regular and consistent bed time routine. If the same things happen every night, then your baby will soon learn to associate the routine with sleep.

• Music. Classical music, lullabies and womb sounds reassure your baby that her crib or cot is a warm and comforting place to be. This makes sense when you think back to time in the womb, when your baby was exposed to an orchestra of gurgles, swishes and beats.

• Night lights. Although your baby may sleep better in a dark room, when she wakes up in the night, she may feel disoriented because she cannot see the things that she recognises around her. The soft glow of a night light can help to reassure your baby that she is in familiar surroundings and soothe her back to sleep again.

• Baby Sleeping bag. This product will keep your baby at the right temperature and remove the need for bed covers, which can be a potential hazard if she gets entangled in them. Your baby can be picked up in the sleeping bag for a cuddle or a feed and settled back to sleep in the crib or cot with minimal disturbance. Make sure that the sleeping bag fits comfortably and that the tog rating is suitable for the season.

• Comforter. Your baby may fall asleep more easily if she has a soft, silky blanket or familiar soft toy nearby to provide comfort and security. Very often, preference is directed towards comforters that bear the smell of a loving and responsive adult. Even the best sleepers sometimes need a little comfort and reassurance!

• Slumber bear. A fabulous sleep aid, which can lull your baby to sleep in minutes! The Slumber Bear plays actual human heartbeat and intra-uterine sounds, which remind her of the security and comfort of the womb.

• Cuddly toys. Cuddly toys that emit a pleasant smell such as lavender can reduce stress and aid relaxation before bedtime. When gently heated, the toy can warm your baby's feet and hands, which can trigger the sleep mechanism.

• Swaddle blanket. Prevents your baby from startling herself awake and relieves digestive problems such as colic and milk reflux by providing gentle, even pressure around the abdomen. Research shows that swaddling can increase the length of time that your baby spends sleeping because it is associated with the comfort and security of the womb.

• Sleep positioner. A sleep positioner can help your baby get a comfortable night's sleep and stay in the correct sleeping position. The gentle incline of the positioner can alleviate digestive problems and help to reduce milk reflux. The sleep positioner also has a device that mimics the sound of the human heartbeat, which gives your baby the sensation that you are close by.

• Natural lamb's wool fleece. Recognised for centuries as a natural sleep aid, which traps warm air, absorbs or releases moisture and keeps your baby's temperature stable. Cover the lamb's wool fleece with a fitted sheet if used in the crib or cot.

Sleep aids can help your baby to fall asleep without leading to any problems or bad sleep habits. They can be parental lifesavers!

Baby - Safe Sleeping Guidelines

To ensure that your baby has a safe environment in which to sleep there are a number of things which you need to take into consideration. The cot, the room temperature, the bedding and the positioning of your baby are all important factors that you will need to monitor. The following guidelines taken from various sources including FSID and government papers will help you to be informed and avoid any potential hazards.

Baby's Bed

For the first 6 months you should arrange it so that you can always be in the same room as your baby when he is asleep so that you may keep a close eye on him. Whether you opt for a cot, basket or cotbed you need to ensure that basic construction safety standards are met, these include making sure that there are no spaces in which your baby could get stuck, ensuring that the bed is sturdy and that no toxic or lead based varnish or paint is used. The mattress you choose is important and the general recommendation is that you get a new one. If you do get one second hand then you need to ensure that it is firm and that it fits the baby's cot snugly, there should be no gaps around the edges. It should not have any tears or cracks, there should be no sagging and it should be clean and dry.

When you have a safe sleeping environment set up for your baby then this is where he should sleep, avoid letting your baby sleep on a sofa, bean bag, water bed or pillow etc. When your baby is very young do not put toys in the cot with him, although they are great fun when your baby is awake they pose a risk of accidental smothering or causing overheating when they are asleep.

Temperature

Babies do not need heat or hot rooms in which to sleep, the ideal temperature is between 16-20 degrees Celsius (61-68 degrees Fahrenheit). This may seem cool to many of us and so if you are unsure it may be worth getting a thermometer. As a general rule, if you are feeling comfortable in light clothing then the room will be plenty warm enough for your baby.

Do not put your baby to sleep: -

  • Next to a radiator, heater or fire
  • Under a window
  • In direct sunlight

All night heating is rarely necessary and central heating should only be used if it is controlled by a thermostat. Babies need to lose excess heat from their heads and so it is important to make sure that the top of their head is not covered up - remove hats, hoods or any extra clothing. To check if your baby is too hot look for sweating or feel either their neck or their tummy, do not check using their hands or feet as it is normal for these to feel cool. When the room is hot you can cool it by closing the curtains and opening the windows in the day.

In hot weather offer your baby lots to drink and if it is particularly hot then sponge them down regularly with tepid water. If you use a fan do not face it directly at your baby.

Position

Always put your baby to sleep on his back - never on his tummy or side. Typically after 5-7 months they will begin to roll onto their sides, this is natural and at this stage it is not necessary to reposition them, but you can gently turn your baby onto its back at convenient times if you wish. The recommended position in which to place a baby is 'feet to foot'. When your baby's feet are touching the foot of the cot the covers should reach no higher than your baby's shoulders. By securely tucking the blankets and sheets under the mattress it will make it difficult for your baby to wriggle down under the covers. You could alternatively use a baby sleeping bag.

Bedding

For baby's under 12 months old do not use duvets, quilts or pillows and keep the cot free of blankets and stuffed toys. Never use hot water bottles or electric blankets.

You should use either a cotton sheet with light layers of cotton blankets or a baby sleeping bag. If you are using blankets then they should be tucked in firmly and be no higher than the baby's shoulders. To regulate your baby's temperature you can either add or remove blankets.

If you are using a sleeping bag then it should be lightweight, made from cotton and not have a hood. Make sure that it is not so tight around the baby's neck that he could slip down into it. To regulate your baby's temperature when using sleeping bags you can switch to either higher or lower togs.

During the summer months it may not be necessary to use any bedclothes at all.

Cot Bumpers

Until recently there were concerns that bumpers could cause a baby to overheat but research has shown this not to be the case. If you have bumpers make sure that there are no trailing strings or ties attached that could entangle your baby or that they could use to climb out of the cot. Make sure that they are secured properly and that they allow for adequate air flow. The advice from experts is that bumpers should be removed when a baby can either get up onto their hands or knees or when they can sit unaided.

Co-Sleeping

The opinions for co-sleeping are varied but many experts believe there are enough risks for it to be considered dangerous. Having your baby in the bed with you for feeding and play is fine but it is best not to sleep with your baby in the bed (or armchair or settee).

You should especially avoid having your baby sleep in the same bed with you if: -

  • Your baby is under 3 months old
  • You smoke, and this is even if you do not smoke at home
  • You are excessively tired
  • You have been drinking alcohol or have taken any drugs or medication that is likely to cause drowsiness
  • Your baby was born premature (before 37 weeks) or was of low birth weight (less than 2.5kg or 5 ½ pounds)

Having your baby in a cot next to the bed is the ideal position as it allows you to check on him during the night.

More Safety Advice

  • Do not smoke, or let anybody else smoke in the same room as your baby
  • If your baby is not well or if you are worried about him then you should not delay in seeking medical advice.
